I have always loved applique and have admired the lovely work of others many times, especially when gorgeous fabrics have been used to create a beautiful image.
So I thought I’d try my hand at designing and creating some simple applique craft patterns using just felt and a few simple hand stitches. I decided to make some small pincushions (5″ in diameter) because they’re quick to create and an ideal way of using up scraps of felt.
Woodland animals are still on trend at the moment and I thought a woodland theme would be fun …. foxes, badgers and hedgehogs came to mind.
So first let me introduce you to Mr Badger. He’s made from scraps of dark grey, black and white felt with beads for eyes. Mr Badger is appliqued on to a natural felt background. What a cutie!
Next is sleepy Mr Fox, made from scraps of gold felt with a white felt bushy tail and a tiny black brad for his nose. I think he is my favourite ……..
…. and finally, a colourful little hedgehog and toadstool pincushion. This time I used a light green felt for the background with scraps of brown and cream felt for the hedgehog with red and white felt for the toadstool. I used a lovely blanket stitch to finish off around the edge.
I think I’ve changed my mind, this cute little hedgehog is my favourite! Which one is yours?
Happy sewing!

P.S. ~ You can find the patterns for the woodland themed pincushions right here.
My 4-year old daughter says… “Awww, they are so cute!!!” …and I definitely agree with her! =)
