How to make Mini Felt Hearts and Garland

As it’s nearly Valentine’s Day I thought I’d share with you how to make your own mini felt hearts. They are so easy and fun to create that you’ll have a handful of cute hearts in no time! I think they’re perfect for DIY decorations or popping into gifts at any time of the year. I’ll also show you how to make a garland with your felt hearts.

So let’s get started.

You will need:
  • Red felt
  • Red embroidery floss or cotton thread
  • Polyester stuffing
  • Pins and sewing needle
  • Embroidery scissors
  • Template
How to make mini felt hearts:
Step 1

Download the hearts template below and print. (There are two heart sizes to choose from).

Step 2

Cut out the template and pin to felt. Cut out two heart shapes of the same size. (I recommend using a pair of embroidery scissors, they are perfect for cutting out small shapes).

Step 3

Place the two felt heart shapes together and blanket stitch around the edge using 2 strands of matching embroidery floss or cotton thread. Leave a gap for filling.

Step 4

Fill with polyester stuffing and continue stitching to close the gap.

Now you can make as many of these little hearts (in both sizes) as you like. Try using felt in your favourite colours too.

How to make a garland:

To make a garland simply thread a large needle with embroidery floss and push through each heart. Slide and position the hearts along your desired length of floss until you are happy with how they look. Finally, tie a loop at each end of the floss for hanging.

I hope you enjoy making your mini felt hearts.

Happy stitching!
